Dueling Pianos - Phyllis & Ray
An accomplished Memphis, TN, musician and singer, Ray typically accompanies himself on the piano, is joined by a bass player, or leads a trio. After performing the role of Rigolletto for the Opera Theater of Memphis State University and being a semifinalist in the West Tennessee District Metropolitan Opera auditions (1984), he went on to make music his career. The multi-talented baritone has been compared to a younger Lou Rawls, George Benson, or Bobby Short. During his career, Ray has performed with internationally known artists such as the late Peter “Memphis Slim” Chatman and Rufus and Carla Thomas. Honors received in his hometown include playing at the famous Peabody Hotel, singing with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, playing every major music festival, and being the Memphis Arts Council’s first Artist in Residence. More recently, Memphis Mayor W. W. Herenton dedicated the 37th Brass Note on the famous Beale Street Walk of Fame to Ray as a celebration of his contribution to the Memphis music industry. Entertaining for the world has taken Ray to 19 countries in Europe, Scandinavia, the Far East, and Northern Africa, where he opened the renovated palace La Mamounia Hotel, in Marrakesh, Morocco. His last overseas tour took him to Tiffany’s New York Bar at the Grand Standford Harbor View in Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong; the Pink Elephant Jazz & Piano Bar at the Hotel Post, Zermatt, Switzerland; and Hotel Splendid in Zurich, Switzerland. While in Switzerland, Ray enjoyed the opportunity to play twice with Phil Collins for the VIP pre-festival parties given by the late Claude Nobs, producer of the Montreux Jazz Festival. Since his return to America, Ray has performed for the last 20 years in many famous hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, and for 15 of those years, Ray has been performing at the famous Bellagio Hotel and Casino.
Expanding his musical interests as a song writer, during the last three years, Ray has recorded two CDs:
“The Music of Ray Glover,” a CD of music composed by Ray with singers and musicians of Las Vegas and Los Angeles performing vocals and instrumentals.
“If I Could Fly,“ a song with Ray Glover’s music and lyrics by Lamonte Mclemore, a member and founder of the famous pop group The Fifth Dimension, with Julio Hanson vocalist.
